Some of you might might be new to digital communications on the ham bands, so let me start from the beginning. If you are running V2.2.0 with the 991 upgrade to V2.2.1. Version 2.2.1 appears to have FIXED the issue. when you try to connect the 991 you will see a “hamlib error” when you try to do the CAT connection. UPDATED – There is a BUG in WSJT-X V.2.2.0. No USB to Serial converter needed, so additional interface boxes – just a USB cable (*Note, see farther down in the post as to which cable you want to purchase. But, it doesn’t use outdated drivers and it works.Ft-991a digital modes CAT control as well as PTT via one USB cable from the computer to the radio. It has a cheap feel, but then, it was cheap. On a scale of 0 to 5 stars (5 being best), I rate this 4 stars. The USB end is fat so it doesn’t fit side-by-side with other USB devices (horizontally) My Rating The plastic feels like I can possibly break it with my fingers. It was the lowest priced cable on Prime at the time I ordered, so I was able to get it in two days. But, this one works in Windows with whatever current drivers are available. I see a lot of complaints about similar devices not working with later versions of Windows due to a boot-leg copy of the chip inside. With 800 memories, I have a lot of room to add whatever frequencies I want. I have programmed the FT-8900R several times, and I still have more programming to do. But, when I plugged it into my USB 3, 4-port adapter, it has worked flawlessly, even when I move it around to different ports on the device. It acted a little flaky when I plugged it into the front USB2 ports on my computer. I have 3 others that fit nicely side-by-side, but this one has to be on an end so I only lose use of one of my ports. So I can’t plug this wire in next to another similar one. The plastic covering over the USB end is pretty wide. I didn’t see any drivers loading or complaints from Windows. When I moved it to another USB port, it worked immediately. On the computer end, I plugged this device into a port where I had previously used another USB Com port device, and Windows didn’t like it. The connector is a tight fit into the programming port so it takes a bit of effort to plug it in and unplug it. (You can read about my experience in the article Programming the Yaesu FT-8900R.) He informed me about how to set the Yaesu radio into program, “clone” mode. So, I mentioned it to Josh, a ham I was talking to on 2 meters at the time. The USB end still rattles and the cable still put the radio into transmit. On the 13th I received the replacement cable and had the same results. But, then again, this is the lowest priced cable I found with Prime delivery. When I plugged it into the radio, the radio locked into transmit and I didn’t discover it until it timed out (I have a 3 minute time-out-transmit.) The plastic cover over the USB feels cheap. When I received the first one, it had a rattle in the USB end. My first impression of this cable wasn’t very good. It was then that I discovered that the only defect was a screw loose behind the mic. I first purchased this cable on March 9, ’18 and thought it was defective. Please know and follow the instructions so you don’t damage your radio. WARNING: The Yaesu Radios work differently than most other brands for programming. Product Review Margovo USB Programming Cable for Yaesu Radios
